As a kid Labor Day weekend was always a big deal because it was also my Dad’s birthday. Normally that meant a big party that lasted most of the weekend and more music that could be imagined. Dad’s been gone for quite some time now, but Labor Day weekend is still a time of family reflection and music. Happy Labor Day weekend to any and all.
Dad was an amazing man, even though I didn’t get to know him well as he died when I was just a kid. However, he was around long enough to teach me a thing or two. For the most part, Dad was a peaceful man. He looked for reasons to smile and would do so often. While Mom taught Sunday school down at the church, Dad was tinkering somewhere if not in church with us – and the tinkering was normally doing something to help someone else out.
Labor Day reminds us to celebrate the benefits of our labors. Folks will be barbecuing, camping, swimming, shopping, hunting, fishing, hiking, and Sunday driving for the holiday. There will be millions of pictures taken. Tons of hot dogs and hamburgers eaten, and generally a celebration across the country will be had. Some towns will have parades, others will have fireworks displays, others will have activities in the town park. Wherever you are, remember to get out and be a part of the day.
Celebration is a part of life…and we should embrace it. Remember to celebrate your spiritual beliefs…whatever they may be…they are a part of you!
